Entrance Mats for Businesses: Quick Tips
Entrance mats are the first line of defense for any business helping to keep dirt, water and debris out of their interior. With so many mats to choose from, from carpet mats to rubber mats, it can be difficult to figure out which is best for your application. To best find the mat that is perfect for your entry way, one must keep a couple of key elements in mind: traffic flow and weather.
Traffic flow is one of the most important factors in determining which type of entrance mat would be best for your entryway. For light to moderate traffic, typically a carpet topped entrance mat is sufficient to eliminate most dirt, water and debris from shoes. Typically one would want to go with a minimum 5’ long mat which allows an average individual to hit the mat with both feet. Since these mats are installed indoors, it is typically necessary to clean these mats at least 1-2 times in a two week period, depending on traffic, to keep them looking brand new.
For areas where traffic flow is heavier, a tandem of an outdoor rubber mat and an indoor carpet mat would be recommended. The rubber mat would be your first line of defense helping to eliminate most water, dirt and debris from individual’s shoes. The carpet mat would be the second line of defense helping to further eliminate and trap dirt and debris in the fibers of the carpet, allowing for easy cleaning and disposing of irritants. The longer the indoor entrance mats, the more times a persons shoes are likely to step on the mat as well. Long indoor entrance mats are especially helpful in drying off peoples shoes better than shorter mats.
The next important factor to consider when purchasing an entrance mat is weather. With so many different environments all over the country, it can be difficult to find the mat that will give you the best result. Typically for areas that receive a lot of weather, a rubber entrance mat is the best to use due to its durability in extreme weather and its ability to stay slip resistant even when wet. With rubber mats, it is best to use a mat that is made from nitrile rubber (NBR) or styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). NBR is more rigid and is very tough in inclement weather and SBR keeps mats more flexible, while maintaining the mats integrity. In areas where weather is not much of an issue, such as the Desert Southwest, you can typically use either rubber or carpet topped mats. But for most outdoor mats, a rubber entrance mat will give you the most durability and slip resistance.

Using these two major factors, will help you properly determine the best mat or mats to use to properly eliminate a large portion of the dirt and debris that can enter into your business.
