Foam vs. Rubber – How to Select the Right Gym Flooring Material

One of the single most asked questions we receive here at RubberFlooringInc.com is “Should I get foam or rubber for my home gym flooring?”  This quick post is going to explain the benefits and disadvantages to using each type of material in an attempt to help answer that question for everyone.

Benefits of foam Include:

Foam Floor Tiles

  • Light weight
  • Flexible and shock absorbent
  • Soft
  • Water proof
  • An excellent insulator
  • Wide variety of colors
  • Available in interlocking tiles or portable mats
  • Easy to install and keep clean

All of these reasons make foam an excellent choice for home gyms and portable exercise mats.

Disadvantages to using foam include:                           

  • Will indent under heavy weight
  • Less durable than rubber
  • Can be punctured or scratched

Benefits of rubber include:

Rubber Gym Tiles

  • Extremely durable
  • Excellent insulator against sound transmission
  • Able to withstand heavy weight equipment
  • The “Green” story – black rubber flooring is made using recycled rubber tires
  • Available in easy to install interlocking tiles and low cost rubber rolls
  • East to clean

All of these reasons make rubber an excellent choice for commercial gyms and home gyms where heavy weight equipment and free weights are used.

Disadvantages to using rubber include:

  • Rubber flooring is very heavy
  • Does not insulate well against temperature transmission
  • Bright colored rubber is usually made from virgin rubber and can be more expensive

    Great analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of foam vs rubber. I think someone could get away with foam for a real basic home gym with very light equipment, but rubber is definitely the way to go for a more serious gym that you want to be durable and really last.
